How Community Solar Works
There’s no work for you when you choose community solar with us. You set up your account, and we do the rest. You’ll be making a difference – and saving on your energy costs – in no time.
Use the Power of Community
When you subscribe to a local community solar project that supplies renewable energy to your area’s power grid, you receive solar credits on your utility bill to help cover your monthly payment. On the bill you receive for your subscription, you’ll pay for those solar credits at a discounted rate, saving up to 10% on your monthly energy costs.1 No upfront costs, panel installation, or hassle!
Step 1: Search
It’s easy for residents and small business owners like you to see if there’s a local community solar project near you.
- Enter your ZIP code, county, and utility provider.
- We match you with an available local project.
Step 2: Subscribe
Once we’ve identified a project for you, it takes just 5 minutes to set up your account.
- Validate your email and create an account password.
- Estimate your monthly utility usage or log into your utility account.
- Verify your utility rate and select a plan.
- Supply a little information for a soft credit check. (It won’t affect your credit score.)
- Add your preferred form of payment.
Step 3: Save
Once renewable energy from your project is flowing to your local power grid, you receive solar credits on your utility bill, helping to cover your monthly payment. You will receive a bill from Nelnet Renewable Energy for your electricity used at a discounted rate.
- With the discount you receive on your solar credits, you save up to 10% on your energy costs.1

With community solar, you support locally produced renewable energy use – and the critically important renewable energy industry.
You’ll save up to 10% on your energy costs!1 When you subscribe to a local project, you purchase energy credits – called solar credits – that help cover your existing utility payment.
