Savings

As a community solar subscriber, your solar credits, and resulting savings on annual energy costs will vary depending on the state program or specific solar garden. Your cost savings is dependent on your energy usage and the portion of the community solar garden allocation you receive. Your individual solar garden allocation would be determined using your current monthly energy usage with your existing utility company. People who subscribe to a community solar garden in Colorado can save up to 10% on their annual energy costs.

Sustainability

Over 127 million metric tons of carbon dioxide are offset each year by American solar power. That’s like planting over 2 billion trees.

Access

A National Renewable Energy Laboratories and Department of Energy 2015 report estimated that roof accessibility issues prevented nearly 50% of consumers and businesses from being able to host photovoltaic (PV) systems. Among the issues noted:

  • Property renters may not be allowed to install solar on the property.

  • Multi-tenant dwellings or businesses may not own their rooftop or have access to a large enough roof space for PV installation.

  • Owners or renters may not have access to ample or proper roof space for installation

This number of nearly 50% did not factor in those consumers and businesses who may not be able to afford rooftop installation and maintenance, which would only increase the percentage of those unable to install PV systems.

Growth of Community Solar

Solar is fast becoming the future of renewable energy. Just in the first quarter of 2021, the U.S. installed 5 gigawatts (GWdc) of solar PV capacity, reaching 102.8 GWdc of total installed capacity. That’s enough to power 18.6 million American homes. At this rate, the U.S. solar industry will install an additional 160 GW of capacity over the next 5 years.

Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Greenhouse Gas Equivalencies Calculator can help you convert abstract measurements into everyday terms, such as the annual emissions from power plants, homes, vehicles, and more. While the calculator is useful in communicating your greenhouse gas reduction strategy, the numbers provided are estimates and are intended for communication purposes only. They should not be used for formal emissions analysis or carbon footprints.
